  • The weather has it in for me!

When I set out for work this morning it was raining stair-rods.
Throughout the morning nice and clear.
12.20pm, ten minutes before lunch, the heavens opened and didn't stop until gone 2 when I'd dripped my way back to the office.
Throughout the afternoon, not a drop.
    Until NOW!

What have I done to deserve being rained on at every >:XXing opportunity?

  • The fishing trip

Two men were out fishing one day in the middle of a large lake.
After a few hours of chugging beers and talking drivel one of them suddenly feels his line snag on something, so he reels it in only to find it's an old bottle.
"Ernie!" he says to his pal, "you shouldn't chuck your empties over the side, you know."
And Ernie says "But I didn't throw anything over the side, Bert. Let's have a look at it" and he grabs the bottle from his friend and rubs it clean.
Suddenly there's a puff of smoke and a genie is standing there on the surface of the lake, and he says: "Thank you for releasing me, I shall grant you one wish."
Without hesitating Ernie says "I wish this lake was made of beer!"
"'Tis done." says the genie and he promptly vanishes.
Ernie starts filling some of his empty bottles with beer from the lake when suddenly when Bert starts hitting him and calling him all kinds of names.
Ernie sits up and says, "What's wrong, Bert?"
And Bert says, "You doofus! Now we're going to have to piss in the boat!"

  • What the hell?

    Something is afoot.

Every time I check up on any comments I either get one comment per post despite there being more than one on several of them. So I click on "show all comments" and it comes up with "No comments for this post"
So I click on the title of the post and I no longer see my friend's avatars.
So I scroll down the page and click on "Next Page" whereby I'm redirected to April 11.

    WTF is going on?!?!

  • The art of innuendo and the passing of a great exponent

I mourn the loss of the great Humphrey Lyttleton, a fine upstanding member of the team that brought us "I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue" and a great exponent of the art of innuendo.
The world would be a much less colourful place without such allegedly "base" humour.

Only the other day S came into my office to say that I had a large package downstairs, and could I get it up quick because it was blocking their passage.

  • A proverb to ponder

Be not afraid of growing slowly, be only afraid of standing still.

  • Today

What can I say about today?

I've been extremely busy again all day, with little time to post anything much except a few comments while waiting for the photocopier to catch up with me.

Mainly I've been busy still trying to figure out how to use this new piece of software properly as we seem to be the only department using it (for a very good reason - it hasn't been through the security testing process ) and as a result if we send out anything generated by this mega-ultra-gucci-with-knobs-on software it has to be converted so that it can be opened in either Word, Excel, Visio or the like. Can I figure out how to do it? Yes. Can I figure out how to do it so that it remains legible? No .
And guess what someone has asked for urgently...

It doesn't help that my office door hasn't stayed closed for more than five minutes all day with people coming in and out giving me or collecting more work.

Oh, well. At least I've earned my pay over the last two days, but if this is what it's like at what is usually the quiet end of the week, what the hell's it going to be like on Friday? Especially with the Bank Holiday weekend looming. 8|

  • Typically April

Sunshine, rain, hail, rain, sunshine (repeat ad infinitum)

Still, at least the trees are in full on blossom mode:

    Blossom

and the mixture of sunshine and showers brings out some of nature's beauty...
    Photobucket

(excuse the quality of that last one, it was taken through the back bedroom window and has lost the vibrancy of the colours :( but you can at least just about make out the faint outer bow)

  • Been busy

    Yep, you read that right.

The main reason why I've been so quiet on here today is because I've had a busy, busy day.
Mostly work-type busy, with a bit of catching up with all you lot-type busy.

And now it's time for me to leave the office and go home.

It's bloody tippin' it down out there! I think I'll stay until this shower of hail passes.

  • Flagcounter

I've just noticed something really good about Flagcounter:

Click on the Flagcounter panel to check out how many nations have visited yer blog and the click on each country's name and it will give you a little potted history of that nation.

Informative and edumacational! Cool! I like it even more now than when I thought it little more than a boasting tool. (look how multi-national I am, nyer!)

  • Things to do and reasons why

    Things to do:
    1. Pay off credit card (or at least show willing)
    2. Budget more carefully this month as financial cushion will be unavailable at the end of the month.
    3. Buy a new battery for lappy.

I'm almost back to where I was 18months ago. Down the pub on a Sunday evening with just my music and a puzzle book to keep me occupied while the rest of the world does its own thing around me.
I've left lappy at home because I'm now only getting twenty minutes use out of a fully charged battery. All I can say is hooray for the iPod touch, even if it is a pain in the arse to type anything longer than a few sentences and you can't watch embedded YouTube clips.
Kinda makes looking through ilfuretto's blog a bit pointless

  • Lovely day for it

It's a nice bright sunshiny day out there. So nice and sunshiny in fact that I've had to open the patio doors to let the greenhouse-like heat out of the conservatory.

Paddington's been out for a short walk, and is now relaxing on the patio, barking at the clouds as they lazily drift by. Penny's decided that she's definitely not a morning dog and is snoring away in her bed. The birds are singing in the trees and I'm in here blogging and charging up my iPod .

I suppose I could dig my bike out from under the accumulated clutter and get out and get some much-needed exercise.

Naah . Too much like hard work. I'll pour myself a cider and join Paddington, I think. Got to make the most of it while it lasts!

  • Friday 5

    1. What is your favourite comedy film?
    Man's Favourite Sport?

    2. What is your favourite comedy on TV?
Hmmm... nope, can't think of anything current that tickles. I'd have to say re-runs of Red Dwarf.

    3. Who is your best Comedy actor/actress?
    Steve Martin

    4. If you could write a comedy what would it be about?
    Life in general, I suppose.

    5. What is the Funniest thing you have ever seen be it in person or on a TV show or film?
When my mate Napalm fell backwards off his barstool with an almost full pint in his hand and when he hit the floor he didn't spill a single drop.
Either that or when I was on a boating holiday some years ago and some arrogant French guy was trying to impress a group of young ladies. He jumped from their boat onto what he though was the canal bank. Those reed beds were rather deep! :))

  • Bloody computers!

Because of certain problems with this site, I changed over to a GoogleMail account. All well and good, while I was using Lappy or my works PC I was getting notifications by email.

Then, this evening, I decided to use my home PC.

Sure, I was getting notifications, but because we've got Virgin PCguard I couldn't open anything because of the useless pop-up blocking system they use. It's so effective that it's useless.

I tried to open the comment I had been notified only to be told that a pop-up had been blocked. No little button to say "allow this pop-up" or anything, just a message to unblock the pop-up by going through the PCguard set-up. So I did and I tried again. the same thing happened.
So I did the same again, only this time I rebooted after allowing the site to use pop-ups. I tried again, only to be told "pop-up blocked".

    :: >:XX ::

I'm not using that PC again.

  • 35,000 feet

    Your Personality at 35,000 Says...

Deep down, you prefer spending time alone to spending time with others. You enjoy thinking more than talking.

You don't spend much time thinking about your place in the world. You are who you are - and people can just deal with that!

Your gift is having good ears. You are naturally musical, and you pick up foreign languages easily.

You are inspired by what is possible. Real life is often too ordinary for you.

It's very easy for you to feel happy. You can find peace with any situation.

  • Bloody consultants!

Right, high time for my morning whinge.

The report that I transfered to disc a few days ago http://notbobsbits.blog.co.uk/2008/04/21/if-it-s-my-fault-entirely-then-go-ahead--4073379 has suddenly reappeared in paper form on my desk with instructions for me to scan the whole thing into another disk.

And now my scanner's playing up.

It must be Thursday. Things like this only happen on a Thursday. :##

What Your Taste in Chocolate Says About You

You are unique, creative, and fascinating.

You don't do what's expected of you.

You go for what's unknown and uncharted.

You are lively, goofy, and a total blast.

You're incredibly happy, and you always are lifting spirits.

You love being by yourself and thinking. Developing your own theories and ideas is fun.

You feel lost when you're forced to be social. Being with other people can be lonely for you.

"You are lively, goofy, and a total blast. You're incredibly happy, and you always are lifting spirits"?
Dunno about that. Otherwise quite accurate

  • St George and the Playwright

    Happy Saint George's Day!

In Christian hagiography, Saint George (ca. 275-281 – April 23, 303) was a soldier of the Roman Empire, from the then Greek-speaking Anatolia, now modern day Turkey, and is venerated as a Christian martyr. Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Eastern Catholic Churches. He is immortalised in the tale of George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. St. George is the patron saint of Aragon, Canada, Catalonia, China, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Montenegro, Palestine, Portugal, Russia, and Serbia, as well as the cities of Amersfoort, Beirut, Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa, Ljubljana, and Moscow, as well as a wide range of professions, organisations and disease sufferers.

    "Liberator of captives,
    and defender of the poor,
    physician of the sick,
    and champion of kings,
    O trophy-bearer,
    and Great Martyr George,
    intercede with
    Christ our God that
    our souls be saved."

Saint George defeats the Dragon in Berlin, Germany
Saint George defeats the Dragon in Berlin, Germany
The Freemasons consider St. George one of their primary patron saints. The United Grand Lodge of England holds its annual festival on a day as near as possible to St. George's Day, and St. George is depicted on the ceiling of the Grand Lodge Temple on Great Queen Street, London. A number of Masonic lodges around the world bear the name of St. George.

St George's Day is also celebrated with parades in those countries of which he is the patron saint. Also, St George is the patron saint of Scouting. On St George's day (or the closest Sunday), Scouts in some countries choose to take part in a parades and some kind of church service in which they renew their Scout Promise. The scouting award for Episcopalian adults is the St. George medal.

He is also the patron saint of skin disease sufferers and syphilitic people.  In Colombia there is a school called Gimnasio Campastre which honors St. George and where they recite his hymn every Friday. In Santiago, Chile, there is a school called Saint George's College, part of the congregation Holy Cross. In the Norwegian military, Saint George is also the patron of the Cavalry.

Being half English and half Irish, I get the chance to celebrate the patron saint of England like a true Irishman. I'm going out tonight to sink a few black soups in his name!

It is also the 444th anniversary of the birth of this fellow:

    William Shakespeare 1564 - 1616

and also the 392nd anniversary of his death. Must have been the effort of blowing out those 52 candles

  • Reassured now.

I always worry about the security programmes on my lappy. I worry that they may not actually work, and that lappy is infested with all sorts of nasty bits of kit trying to steal my identity, or wipe my hard drive unexpectedly.

I was reassured that my security is fully up to scratch last night when lappy got hit with a Trojan Horse. A little box popped up and told me that this was not a good thing and do I want to get rid? Obviously I got rid of it.

So it does work then. Excellent. I can relax a bit now. :D

  • Triple recharge time.

I've had enough blogging today. It seems a lot of people are complaining about things being a bit screwy around here. It's happening to me as well, but there just seems to be a general air of "Meh!" around at the moment.

So I'm signing off for tonight, putting lappy on charge along with the iPod, and I'm going to watch the rest of "Disaster Zone: Volcano Under New York" on the Sci-Fi channel (looks quite naff :D) before trudging upstairs to recharge my own batteries.

    Catch ya later!

  • The Bee part (b)

I nipped out for a ciggie and when I got back the bee had gone.

NotBob's Innovative Solutions #1: When stuck with a problem, nip out for a ciggie and by the time you get back the problem will have solved itself!

  • The Bee

This afternoon I have a bee trapped between the panels of the sash windows in my office. Bloody nuisance it is. It's trying its best to get out from between the panes, but isn't intelligent enough to back the way it came.

    So here's my problem -

I want to release it as it is annoying me with its constant buzzing, and I want to see no harm come to it, after all, there are so few around these days.
If I close the window the bee will be released into the room and probably won't figure out that it needs to wait intil I've re-opened the window, yet if I open the upper part of the sash window there is no way of telling whether I'll be able to close it again (it's a very tall, heavy and somewhat rotten window).

I think I'll nip out for a ciggie while I ponder this one.
